The PCIA Climbing Site Belayer Certification is a basic training class and evaluation created specifically for the needs of summer camps, gyms and outdoor education programs. The purpose of the course is to provide a nationally standardized curriculum of instruction for individuals who provide supervision and belaying to participants at climbing sites.
The PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Course provides instructors and potential instructors with a in depth and standardized understanding of the skills essential to teaching climbing in an indoor setting. It is the first step in a sequential approach to professional climbing instructor development.
The majority of outdoor top rope climbing instruction takes place at bottom managed sites. Recognizing this the PCIA has created a focused course and optional certification exam that addresses base managed climbs.
There are a number of climbing areas where managing climbs from the top is the best choice. A site over water is a great example as are locations where the approach leads to the top and the cliff sides are too difficult to easily hike down or are pristine and would suffer from impact.
The PCIA Single Pitch Climbing Instructor™ certification is granted to an individual who completes the Base and Top Managed Climbing Instructor requirements and can demonstrate basic lead climbing skills at a 5.6 standard. It may be completed as part of the 5 day Outdoor Climbing Instructor Series or assessed at a later date.
The PCIA Lead Climbing Instructor™ module is a rigorous two day training for already proficient single pitch climbing instructors that enhances fundamental instructional skills. This course goes well beyond all single pitch courses to more thoroughly address critical skills associated with lead climbing and teaching leading.
The PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor Course™ Provider program is designed to ultimately create a network of qualified instructors through the United States who can deliver high quality yet economical courses to the many universities, summer camps, and private companies that operate artificial climbing walls.
